Thrifted Thursday: It Was All Yellow (Coat)

Let’s talk thrifting.

I’ve been shopping at thrift stores since I was a little kid. It never bothered me that I was wearing “old clothes.” In fact, I have a distinct memory of watching Lizzie McGuire and noticing that Lizzie’s bestie Miranda was wearing a top that I had - just in a different colour - that my mum bought second-hand at Frenchy’s (it was this top, from the episode where Lizzie does rhythmic gymnastics) (mine was blue, not pink).

Yeah, thrifting could be cool. Did the other girls own a top from Lizzie McGuire? Didn’t think so!

Now I wear at least one thrifted item every day. So I decided, why not challenge myself to wear an entirely thrifted look?

Enter: Thrifted Thursday. I’ll be sharing my favourite all-thrifted looks with you!

Let’s start with this peacoat. I love a yellow coat. During my first job at Old Navy circa 2010, I was so excited to use my employee discount (even though it was only 25%) on a bright canary yellow coat. This one is a more mustard-y and perfect for fall.

As for the brand - I’m not sure! The label is in Japanese! Did I mention I’m travelling to Japan for two weeks in April? Of course I’ll be documenting it all (and hopefully will get to some of Tokyo’s famous thrift stores).

You can’t see them under the coat, but the dress has 3/4 length sleeves. It’s a very simple & Other Stories (Paris Atelier) dress that is the best for those fall/winter workdays when you’re running late and need to just throw something on that still looks cute and professional. You can definitely dress it up with a necklace, but I prefer to just wear a pair of earrings (like my fave Angela Hoops from The Sweet Magnolia - don’t forget to use my code EMMA to get 20% off your order).

Finally, boots! A thigh-high boot can absolutely be office-appropriate. I used to associate them with a pre-makeover Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman but I think we’ve come a long way since 1990. If they’re paired with the right outfit (think a pencil or 3/4 length skirt) then it can look professional.

The boots are Chinese Laundry and they’re suede (save for more elastic fabric on the calves) with a wedge heel. They’re surprisingly comfortable!

I’ve been feeling incredibly excited and inspired to put together more all-thrifted outfits. If you’re looking to revamp your fall wardrobe, I suggest making a thrift store your first stop before looking to fast fashion.

Some of my favourite places to thrift in Toronto are Double Take YSM, Good Market and Common Sort.

Before I go, I’ll share an outtake of me and my cat, Dewey. Dewey is a Toronto Humane Society alum and alternates between being a very large troublemaker and a very large sweetie. Favourite activities of Dewey include dragging his wand toy around the apartment, hanging out in the bathtub and biting ankles (we’re working on it).
