Thrifted Thursday: Wool Coat Wonder

About this coat…

In eighth grade, I went to the Suzy Shier Outlet in Bayers Lake and bought a double-breasted coat with a tie sash. It was cute, but also a little fancy for my middle school in 2007, where ski jackets were the norm. I’m pretty sure the first time I wore this coat out of the house was to go to church on Christmas Eve.

Sixteen years later, I still had the coat. I wore the coat to examinations for discovery when I was articling. I wore it to the office in my first winter as an associate lawyer. Then the second winter. Then the third.

When winter started looming this year, I’d had enough of the Suzy Shier coat. I desperately needed an upgrade.

I started looking at my go-to places for new items: Uniqlo, Hudson’s Bay and the like. If I was going to do away with the coat that had seen me through so many years, I wasn’t just going to go for any coat. But the fast fashion and department stores just weren’t doing it for me.

Because I’m me, I went thrifting. More specifically, I went to Good Market in Leslieville. Even more specifically, I went to their online store.

That is where I found this coat. A gorgeous slate blue Dorothee Schumacher, 100% wool, perfectly oversized coat in excellent condition. I’m kind of obsessed with this coat. Like, that giant decorative button? Obsessed.

Even better, I netted it for $195. My mother raised me to know a bargain when I see it.

Now about the rest of this outfit. As you might know, Thrifted Thursday is where I create an entire look out of second-hand pieces. Of course, for such a stunning coat, I had to pull some of my best for a gorgeous fall and winter look.

I love a windowpane print. I’ve probably said that before on this blog. You know how the chevron print has a chokehold over a certain contingent of millennial girls? That’s me with windowpane. My home and my wardrobe are full of windowpane prints.

This windowpane print button-up from Zac & Rachel is one of my favourite items in my closet. It’s a classic black and white print and it’s perfect for an office look. I love to pair it with some wide-leg black pants (like these ones).

Speaking of pants, these wool Saks Fifth Avenue culottes! As I’ve said before, it can be tricky to find clothes when you’re petite. These pants are cropped at exactly the right place for me, and show a little bit of ankle rather than dragging on the ground. They’re also high-waisted, which I love.

The shoes might be a little more early fall than the weather we’re getting right now in Toronto. But these Coach flats add a little bit of femininity with their ballerina pink hue and bow accents. But for days where it’s literally freezing out, a pair of ankle boots looks just as good.

I hope I’ve inspired you to find your own dream coat, and I hope even more that you’ll thrift it.
