That Time I Met Julia Fox in Toronto

It’s been quite a week.

I officially launched Elevate with Emma on Monday. I was so happy to see how so many of you share my same feelings about women’s fashion and can’t wait to start this journey with you all. In between then and Friday, I had the kind of week that makes you think “Did I plan this all in my head?” My life is busy, but it’s the good kind of busy.

Let’s take it to Friday night: my friend Shaunna and I had tickets to see Something You Said Last Night at the TIFF Lightbox Theatre. I knew the movie had gotten great reviews when it premiered at TIFF last fall, and since then Julia Fox came on to executive produce and was moderating a Q&A with the director and cast after Friday’s screening. We’re big Julia fans, so we had to go!

When I say I’m a Julia fan, I mean I literally dressed up as her for Halloween.

The screening was at 7:30 pm, and it didn’t make sense for me to go home between finishing work and the screening. So, I had to create a look that would work for the office and an evening out. I love the challenge of putting together something that is sensible enough for work and can go downtown with no need to change.

I started with the bag. I was lucky enough to snag a vintage Louis Vuitton Speedy 35 in Monogram Canvas from The Sweet Magnolia’s pre-loved luxury drop. I’ve already talked about how I love The Sweet Magnolia’s luxe jewelry, and they’ve since began selling authentic pre-loved designer pieces. Based on the manufacturer’s code in my bag, I can date it back to the 1980s. It has held up incredibly well, and I love a handbag that has a story to tell.

(Did you know you can use my code EMMA at The Sweet Magnolia for 20% off?)

I knew it would look perfect with this 4th & Reckless Jiana Printed Satin Shirt I purchased at Hudson’s Bay. The print looks very retro and complements the classic LV monogram. The shirt is super comfy, too!

I finished off with a pencil skirt from Calvin Klein (I also have a matching blazer to make a suit set, but it’s so much better when you can mix and match them as separates) and classic nude heels from Cole Haan. Both of these were bought at Nordstrom before they left Canada. I was very sad to see it go, but you can still purchase many of the brands they carried at other retailers in the country.

So, back to Julia! After a delicious dinner at PAI we went to the theatre and were able to catch Julia, along with the movie’s amazing director Luis De Filippis and the core cast, working the red carpet. Since we already had our tickets and seats, we decided to wait around to see if we could say hello.

Of course she did! I told her how I was her for Halloween and showed her my Instagram, and I truly cannot believe this but she said she had seen my costume already. I was shocked! She was so sweet and indulged Shaunna and I with some pictures.

I cannot recommend Something You Said Last Night enough. It’s a groundbreaking film and an amazing piece of Canadian cinema. It’s funny, touching and at times heartbreaking. If you’re in Toronto I highly suggest checking it out on the big screen. If you can’t, keep an eye out for it when it arrives on digital.

This was such a cool way to end an already amazing week. I can’t wait to share more exciting things with you!
