New York Calls for Polka Dots
Welcome to New York!
(Speaking of Taylor Swift, we all got waitlisted for the Toronto Eras Tour shows, right?)
Anyway… post-lockdown, I’ve been taking advantage of travel and the relatively short distance from Toronto to New York City. I grew up obsessed with all things NYC - Broadway shows, Gossip Girl, Fashion Week. For anyone who remembers Piczo sites, mine was called “newyork-doll.” So, it’s actually surprising to me that my first time in New York was in 2022!
I really love a weekend in the city to see some friends, eat some good food and try something new. And of course, do some thrift shopping!
This is what I wore for a very busy Saturday. You know I love a multi-purpose outfit, and this is actually a look I love wearing to work in the summer.
Let’s start with the skirt. I love polka dots. If you take a look in my closet, you’ll see mostly polka dot and windowpane patterns. I can’t help it! The classics are classics for a reason. This skirt was another Marden’s find (if you don’t know about Marden’s stores in Maine, I get into it here).
It’s from the Tabitha Brown collection for Target. There were so many gorgeous bright prints, but I went for this skirt immediately. I also love how it’s slightly cropped - as a petite girl, most maxi skirts go well past my ankles!
The top is by T by Tahari, from Nordstrom Rack in Buffalo. If you’re a Torontonian, you know a day trip to Buffalo for some Trader Joe’s, Target and now, Nordstrom, is always a good idea. This is such a versatile top - I can definitely see myself wearing it with a suit set.
I’ve talked about my Cole Haan mules before, but these are seriously some of the most comfortable shoes I own. If Cole Haan ever wants to send me some shoes… just know I’m right here waiting.
The purse is from Kate Spade New York. Much like my love of polka dots, I also have a never-ending love affair with quilted bags. We don’t need to talk about the fake Chanel Ligne Cambon bucket bag I bought in seventh grade and used well into tenth… just know it happened.
The sunglasses are by Cake Eyewear. I bought these on a whim at Winners on a lunch break. I usually go for cat-eye shapes because of my round face, but I like how these are a little more angular.
As to what I got up to in New York: I visited the Museum of Arts & Design and the Taylor Swift: Storyteller exhibit (which you can see on my TikTok), enjoyed the fabulous rooftop bar at the Park South Hotel and somehow, found some time to relax!
While I planned on staying in the city just for the August long weekend, the weather had other plans. My Monday night flight was cancelled, so I got an extra morning in NYC which gave me a chance to do some more thrifting. I had come up short that weekend, but on Tuesday morning I popped into Goodwill and found a new with tags dress from Brooks Brothers and a Hill House Home Nap Dress!
I eventually got back to Toronto, albeit 24 hours later than planned. Considering my little Goodwill haul, I’d say it was worth it.
