Thrifted Thursday: How to Wear a Classic White Shirt

I have a love-hate thing with white collared shirts.

I feel like a white collared shirt is the thing you’re told you need to have in a professional wardrobe. One of the first “career” pieces I bought was a white shirt from Banana Republic Outlet. But every time I wear one, I feel like Elizabeth Holmes in court.

It’s a problem.

For the past couple of years, my mum has given the family thrifted gifts for Christmas. She’s already amazing at thrifting, but she saves the best finds for Christmas morning. This year I got an amazing haul, which includes this Foxcroft Non-Iron shirt. It was even new with tags!

The problem with trying to dress for a business professional environment is that most of us look kind of ridiculous when we wear a collared shirt. The great thing about this one is how there are no buttons up top.

White shirts don’t always need to be worn with a pantsuit. I have this Banana Republic skirt that I love to wear in the office or going out (if I’m going out, I’ll usually wear it with a tight shirt).

Full disclosure, the belt isn’t actually thrifted but it’s old enough that it might as well be. My first job was at an Old Navy in 2010, and it came with a pretty sweet discount across the Gap company. I, being the aspiring sophisticated girl that I was, was excited for the 50% Banana Republic discount (it was definitely the most expensive clothing store in the mall at the time). One of my Gap Inc. discount treasures was this belt, and as you can see, I’ve held onto it for years (just in time for bows to come back in style).

I finished it off with my thigh-high suede boots and a pair of winter tights, that I’m not sure if they even came from a thrift store. They just sort of appeared in my drawer one day, and it’s entirely possible they used to belong to my mum or sister. If so, sorry?

I want the gold bow clasp on the belt to be the big accessory for this look, but I couldn’t help putting on my Claire Earrings from The Sweet Magnolia (are you using my code for 20% off?)

Maybe I’ve told on myself a bit on this post by admitting that a lot of my thrifted finds are courtesy of my mum. I guess it’s genetic!
